A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection

First things first, I didn't write this article. But I definitely read it, and it definitely scared me. The article is about Windows Vista, which if anyone read my blog, it is basically all content protection and DRM (Digital Rights Management). Here is a very detailed article by Peter Guttman about it. Read his executive summary below.

Executive Summary

Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order
to provide content protection for so-called “premium content”,
typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection
incurs considerable costs in terms of system performance, system stability,
technical support overhead, and hardware and software cost. These issues
affect not only users of Vista but the entire PC industry, since the effects
of the protection measures extend to cover all hardware and software that will
ever come into contact with Vista, even if it's not used directly with Vista
(for example hardware in a Macintosh computer or on a Linux server). This
document analyses the cost involved in Vista's content protection, and the
collateral damage that this incurs throughout the computer industry.

2007, The year of the Penguin

Now this article I did write! This article was written to help promote 2 things. First, that software programmers start making their software platform independent, meaning, it can be run in Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac OS/X and just about any other major operating system. Why? Well, its a win win situation really. If the programs work in 100% of the market, you get more market coverage. You also are promoting the growth and implementation of other operating systems which help make the market as a whole less vulnerable to attacks. Give it a read, it was intended for people of all technical expertise. Let me know if I confused anyone.
